It’s An Olympic Knockout

with 8 comments

Here’s the latest in our continuing “the Winter Olympics is sort of a bit shit” series, Steven Bradbury winning gold in the short-track speed skating during the 2002 Games at Salt Lake City:

There’s something pleasingly un-Australian about the way Bradbury glides apologetically over the line for victory. He should feel sheepish: exactly the same thing happened in the semi-final. It’s definitely fun, but in a slapstick Saturday night primetime way. You can’t help feeling that custard and Stuart Hall should be involved somehow, or at least Bobby Davro in a fat suit.

I shouldn’t mock: it would take me about four days to complete the distance. There’s only so much momentum you can build up if you aren’t able to take your hands off the side of the rink.

  1. Bradbury does the speaking circuit now – “never give up” kinda stuff. He says that he knew he couldn’t win so deliberately held back, knowing there was some small chance they’d all crash into each other. Yeah, that would be my theory too if I was in the race…

    • I think it’s a good theory for life.

  2. I don’t like the tone of these posts. They are so anti-winter games but we used to love them. We didn’t discriminate between curling, ice dance or skiing- we loved it all. Remember? We would practice the triple salchow (yeah, I googled it for the spelling) in the living room because we never got taken to an ice rink let alone skiing. Don’t be retrospectively judging it as shit, it’s a slippery slope towards denouncing Worlds Strongest Man or Krypton Factor. You’d be shaking the very foundations of our childhood.

  3. They’re not shit – just ridiculous (and just a tiny bit camp)

    • I take it all back. That’s beautiful.

  5. Very nice post and straight to the point. I don’t know if this is actually the best place to ask but do you guys have any thoughts on where to get some professional writers? Thx 🙂
