Misguided World Cup Preview: Group B

with 4 comments

The Argentine squad is probably the most potent in the tournament: Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Higuain, Milito. The gruffnut in the bag of Maltesers is Martin Palermo who is 37 and once missed three penalties in the same international game. Go and put a bet on him to walk off with Golden Boot. Seriously. I’m rubbish at this sort of thing. His selection probably owes as much to the idiosyncracies of his manager. Diego Maradona can now be seen shuffling around looking like E.T. in a pair of cataract glasses. The other day he explained that he has “23 wildcats prepared to leave their skins on the pitch”. This makes me think that his teamtalks are pitched somewhere between Kevin Keegan and Ray Mears.

The Nigerian squad bound jubilantly onto the World Cup scene in 1994, but since then have degenerated under the burden of being the great African hope. Preparations have been hampered by struggles to find a venue for a friendly last week (even Kenilworth Road turned them away) and a delay in London because a technical glitch was discovered on their aeroplane. I like to think they’ve all gone to stay around John Obi Mikel’s house to play on his Wii. There are plenty of other familiar names to look out for, including Nwankwo Kanu. His parents are twins apparently.

I literally cannot remember the last time that South Korea weren’t at the World Cup. I’d like to say that it wouldn’t be the same without them. But it would. Might be time to let some other country from the Asian qualifying region have go, like Yemen or Turkmenistan.

Greece are appearing in their second finals. Their last tilt was in USA ’94 when they won no points, scored no goals and conceded ten. Nice work. Attempts to forget their miserable efforts back then have been foiled by having been drawn in exactly the same group, if you substitute South Korea for Bulgaria. Which I often do anyway.
